The Great Frozen Dinner or Prepared Entre Cook-off
January 8th, 2008What is your favourite frozen entree? Is it ribs from Costco, President’s Choice lasagna?
Like most of us, I spend an inordinate amount of time worrying about food. It usually starts first thing in the morning with my children’s breakfast, followed immediately with their lunches, which can turn into a tug of war - trying to determine what they want versus what they’ll eat. There’s a bit of a lull, and then it’s after school snack time if left unsupervised turns into a grazing period. The hardest part comes last - dinner. Here, everyone wants in on the act, that is everyone except me. I want out of the kitchen.
So this week I am hosting The Great Frozen Dinner/Prepared Entre Cook-off - I would like to know your favourite frozen entree, prepackaged meat, even salad. Tell me where you shop i.e. Costco, Safeway, Superstore or IGA, what you’ve tried and what you like.
I will post the results so other readers can give their opinions too. I am on a quest to find the best pre-made entrees, thereby freeing myself and hopefully others from their kitchens.
I am especially interested in these for the weekends. Often arriving at the cabin after a four hour car ride, the last thing I want to do is start making dinner. The same holds true on our way home from the weekend. Wouldn’t it be nice to wave a magic food wand and have a healthy dinner appear, one that everyone likes?
Send me your favourites. Contest closes next Wednesday January 16th - the winners will be announced on January 31st.
Here’s to getting out of the kitchen and into ……(I’ll let you fill in the blank)
Cheers,
Julie

Costco’s Shepherd’s Pie - in the meat section, fresh made. Yummy, but cheesy!

Great topic Julie!
I shop at Costco, Choices and Stongs. If I had to pick up something prepared at any of them it would be the rotisseri chicken and salad greens. But…if I knew I needed to have something YUMMY ready to warm in the fridge or freezer I would go to Rangoli www.vijsrangoli.ca/market and pick up Kalongi chicken, green beans, daal, jasmin rice and mint mango chutney OR wild salmon cakes for on a bed of mixed greens. Or I would go to Qunince www.quince.ca and get any of their soups, braised meats or fish. Another place which I just read about but have yet to try is Stock Up http://sweetspot.ca/content/view/4219/ for what looks like a great selection of prepared foods. Of course none of these could be considered economical, and fussy children might go to bed hungry but like you, I think about food all day too, the tastier the better! Want to come over for lunch??

Thank you Debb,
Husband’s favourite dish is Sheppard’s Pie, so we will def. give that one a go.
Speaking of children, mine actually had pancakes tonight for dinner, it seems my husband forgot that he was suppose to swing by Costco on the way home from work. Oh well, they were thrilled and ate every bite.
I love your pics Sheryl, I’m a big fan of Indian food so I will def. give this one ago. I think Stock Up is in Kerrisdale is it not?

Hi
I recently discovered Pres Choice Smokin Stampede sliced beef brisket. It makes a great quick meal on a sub bun or hoagie. It is 7.99 for 525 gm, which makes into 4 sandwiches. If you add a ready made coleslaw, or some potato oven fries, you have a quick and filling meal.
It is fully cooked, all you do is heat it up. It is layers of thinly sliced beef dripping in a wonderful thick, spicy chipoltle BBQ sauce.
I highly recommend it. It is refrigerated , not frozen, altho I have frozen it once I got it home.
